
Cristina Santonocito
Cristina Santonocito, MD, Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the
University of Catania and Consultant at the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Policlinico “G.
Rodolico-S. Marco” in Catania, Italy. She earned his MD from the University of Catania and
completed advanced research training at the Weil Insistute of Critical Care Medicine (Palm Springs,
California) in USA and at the ERASME Hospital, a research hospital associated with the
Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium. Dr Santonocito attended several clinical
fellowships in UK working in cardiac anaesthesia and cardiothoracic critical care medicine where
she got trained on echocardiography achieving advanced skills and the European Diploma of
TransEsophageal Ecocardiography (ESC 2014). She worked in several hospitals, private and public,
in Italy dealing with critically ill patients, using modern skills and updated knowledges. During her
daily clinical job she has always been involved on clinical research, as learned during the research
clinical fellowships in USA (Palm Springs, CA), in Belgium (Erame Hospital, Bruxelles) and UK
(John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and Harefield Hospital, London). She particularly care about
ethics and relatives/patients communication. Dr. Santonocito spent has authored over 69 peer-
reviewed publications and contributed to 3 textbooks and multiple chapters in anaesthesiology and
critical care medicine. She is part of the ITACTAIC Board (2024-2026), she is part of the E-
learning Committee of the ESICM. Her research focuses on sepsis, cardiovascular diseases and
echocardiography.
