Expected Learning Outcomes

The course develops skills in health promotion and prevention of infectious and chronic-degenerative diseases, health and the environment with particular reference to the effects of air, water and soil pollutants and their effects on public health; in particular, the effects of environmental determinants and lifestyles on maternal and child health.

Course Structure

Frontal teaching in the classroom with the help of electronic material made available by the teacher.

Knowledge of basic concepts of biology, chemistry

Frontal teaching in the classroom.

If the teaching is given in mixed or remote mode due to the health emergency linked to the aCOVID-19 pandemic, the necessary changes with respect to what was previously stated may be introduced, in order to comply with the program envisaged and reported in the syllabus.

Detailed Course Content

Definition of hygiene and hygiene objectives. Demography. Epidemiological studies. Epidemiology and Prevention of Chronic Degenerative Diseases; general information on tumors, diabetes, ischemic heart disease. Mother and child health. Neonatal screening. Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases. Epidemiology and general prophylaxis of some infectious diseases of particular interest in obstetrics. Disinfection, sterilization and pest control processes. Environmental remediation. Vaccinoprophylaxis. Immunoprophylaxis. Risks for pregnant women and in the pre- and postnatal period of the baby. Epidemiology and prevention of hospital infections: general notes with particular regard to Opportunist Infections, Legionella, Aspergilli. General information on outdoor and indoor environmental risk and health effects. Living and working environments. Air pollution and health effects. Noise pollution and health effects. Water pollution and health effects. General information on solid and liquid waste and related health effects. Pollution from electromagnetic fields and health effects.
