Giuseppe Lanza is Full Professor of Advanced Medical and Surgical Technology and Methodology (Academic Discipline MEDS-26/D, formerly MED/50) at the University of Catania (Italy). After obtaining graduation "cum laude" in Medicine and Surgery, with nomination for the “Barbagallo” Award, and the license to practice medicine, he subsequently received advanced training as a Visiting Clinical Research Fellow in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology of the Royal Victoria Infirmary, NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) and at the Department of Neuroscience of Newcastle University (UK), where he was also selected for an international research fellowship funded by the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS). He subsequently completed his specialist training in Neurology with the highest honors and obtained an International PhD in Basic and Applied Biomedical Sciences. Clinically, he serves as a Consultant Neurologist at the Neurology Unit and is Head of the Clinical Neurophysiology Research Unit and Director of the Intradepartmental Complex Programme in Neurophysiopathology of Brain Aging at the Oasi Research Institute-IRCCS in Troina (Italy), a clinical and research Center that has been formally designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Neurosciences. In this context, from 2015 to 2018, professor Lanza served as a member of the WHO Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee for the development of the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), contributing to the drafting and revision of two chapters on neurological disorders. More recently, professor Lanza completed a first-level Master’s degree in Clinical Research and a second-level Master’s degree in Neurorehabilitation, and was also awarded the prestigious international “Elio Lugaresi Award” by the World Sleep Society in recognition of the quality of his research in the field of sleep medicine. He currently teaches across four Bachelor’s Degree Programmes (Physiotherapy; Speech Therapy; Occupational Therapy; Medical Radiology, Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques), two Master’s/Single-Cycle Degree Programmes (Medicine and Surgery; Rehabilitation Sciences of the Health Professions), one Postgraduate Specialization School (Orthodontics), and one PhD Programme (Technological Innovation in the Biomedical Field); he also serves as a clinical tutor for students of the Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery (Clinical Area III) and has supervised approximately one hundred undergraduate and Master’s degree theses. With regard to university governance and academic management, professor Lanza is currently President of the Degree Programme in Occupational Therapy for the 2026-30 term, a three-year qualifying programme based in Troina. He also serves as Coordinator of the Advisory Board of the Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery and as Vice-President of the Degree Programme in Speech Therapy, having previously served as Vice-President also of the Degree Programme in Physiotherapy. Within his department, professor Lanza is the Quality Assurance Representative, the Head of Department’s Delegate for Third Mission activities, and the Departmental Representative to the Scuola Superiore di Catania, the higher education Centre of the University of Catania; he also serves on the Departmental Teaching Committee and the Committee for the Allocation of Academic Staffing Resources. Professor Lanza is: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Health Sciences and Medicine; Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Open Neuroimaging Journal; Associate Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease; Section Editor of BMC Neurology, Current Alzheimer Research, and Current Medicinal Chemistry; Editorial Board Member of more than 40 journals indexed in PubMed, Scopus and/or Web of Science. He has served as an invited reviewer for more than 800 manuscripts submitted to scientific journals, including Biological Psychiatry, Cochrane, European Journal of Neurology, JAMA Network Open, Journal of Neurology, NeuroImage: Clinical, Neurology, Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, Scientific Reports, Sleep, Sleep Medicine Reviews, Stroke, and Translational Psychiatry. In terms of scientific societies and conference activities, he has delivered more than 100 presentations at national and international conferences and has been an invited lecturer at Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses of regional and national relevance. He is also a full member of more than 20 national and international scientific societies and associations; in particular, he is among the founding members of the Italian Society for Translational Research and Health Professions (SIRTEPS) and served for two consecutive terms on the Executive Board of the Italian Society of Neurosonology and Cerebral Hemodynamics (SINSEC). Within the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), he is a member of the Coordinating Panel on Neuroscience/Translational Neurology, where he has also served as a Management Group member; in May 2024, he was elected EAN Guidelines Representative for the same Panel. Finally, professor Lanza authored approximately 250 publications in international peer-reviewed indexed scientific journals and more than 80 conference abstracts published in indexed scientific journals; Scopus h-index is 48, with more than 5,500 citations. These bibliometric indicators have led to his inclusion, since 2023, in the prestigious list of the world’s most-cited scientists published through the Elsevier Data Repository.

Professor Giuseppe Lanza’s research activity is primarily focused on applied and translational clinical neuroscience, with particular emphasis on clinical neurophysiology, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and related non-invasive brain neuromodulation techniques. His main research lines specifically address the mechanisms of cortical excitability, connectivity, and plasticity, as well as the identification of diagnostic and prognostic neurophysiological biomarkers in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, with particular interest in cognitive impairment and dementia, post-acute and chronic cerebrovascular diseases, and degenerative movement disorders. Another major area of research is sleep medicine, with a particular focus on restless legs syndrome (RLS), REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and the interplay between sleep, cognition, and neurodegeneration, also through integrated neurophysiological approaches (such as TMS-EEG) and brain stimulation techniques (such as repetitive TMS). His scientific activity, within highly qualified multidisciplinary teams, also encompasses neurosonology, neurorehabilitation, neurogenetics, telemedicine, and other health-related technologies. This activity has resulted in participation in multicenter and multidisciplinary research projects, some of which have been funded by local/regional and national governmental institutions, with Professor Lanza serving, or having served, in several of them as Principal Investigator/Co-Principal Investigator or Research Unit Leader; invited lectures and oral presentations at numerous national and international scientific meetings; and approximately 400 scientific products, including 250 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as more than 80 conference abstracts published in supplements of international journals with an impact factor.
