Dottorando

Recent advances in non-invasive imaging technologies have significantly improved the diagnostic approach to inflammatory skin diseases. Among these, Line-Field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography (LC-OCT) represents an innovative tool capable of providing real-time, high-resolution, three-dimensional images of the skin at a cellular level, enabling a “virtual biopsy” with strong correlation to histopathology. Although LC-OCT has demonstrated promising diagnostic potential across a wide range of dermatological conditions, its application in inflammatory dermatoses remains partially explored, particularly in combination with artificial intelligence (AI).

This PhD project aims to evaluate the role of LC-OCT in the non-invasive diagnosis of major inflammatory skin diseases and to establish a robust clinicopathological correlation between LC-OCT imaging features and histological findings. A cohort of patients affected by inflammatory dermatoses, including psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus, lupus erythematosus, and bullous diseases, will be prospectively enrolled. For each patient, LC-OCT imaging will be performed on a target lesion prior to skin biopsy, allowing the creation of paired datasets for direct comparison between in vivo imaging and ex vivo histopathology.

In parallel, the project aims to explore the integration of AI-based deep learning algorithms for the analysis of LC-OCT images, with the objective of identifying specific cellular and cytoarchitectural patterns associated with different diseases. The combined use of LC-OCT and AI has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce the need for invasive procedures, and support clinicians in the differential diagnosis of clinically overlapping conditions.

Overall, this research seeks to validate LC-OCT as a reliable non-invasive diagnostic tool and to lay the foundation for future AI-assisted diagnostic models in inflammatory dermatology, with potential implications for improving patient care and optimizing healthcare resources.
