Module Professional training - Oral Surgery

Expected Learning Outcomes

The student must be able to distinguish the characteristics of oral health and pathologies and the risk conditions of adult and pediatric patients in the field of dentistry, and surgical of the patient in odontostomatology. Achieve and obtain optimal skills in the diagnosis and surgical therapy of mucous and bone pathologies of the oro-maxillofacial area.

The aim is also to make the student acquire the ability to possess knowledge of dental prevention techniques and systems in the surgical field and to acquire mastery in their application. The student must acquire the theoretical knowledge, common practical skills of oral surgery.

At the end of the course, the student will be prepared to recognize, face and solve simple and complex cases of simple and complex oral extractive surgery. In particular, the student will be able to manage surgical and trauma emergencies and their treatment; recognize and properly use the main simple and complex dental extraction techniques; to surgically elevate a flap, to know how to recognize surgical and micro-surgical instruments, recognize and use biomaterials appropriately in oral surgery; know various suturing methods in oral surgery; manage surgical emergencies; plan and organize simple oral surgery; coordinate an assistant chairside for the performance of oral surgery. The student will be able to diagnose the main oral pathologies in the dental field. Finally, the student will be able to perform small oral surgery and small biopsies under loco-regional anesthesia.

The skills acquired will lead the student to develop a critical capacity on the topics dealt with using the skills actively for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in the surgical management of the patient in odontostomatology.

Course Structure

Theoretical-practical internship, interactive exercises and any specific seminars integrated by discussion of the topics dealt with in order to train students in a critical capacity on the topics and allow to acquire a suitable knowledge for surgical management in the patient suffering from specific pathologies of the oro-maxillo facial district.

Surgical management with knowledge of guidelines, operating protocols related to oral surgery in odontostomatology.

  • Drug therapy in oral surgery
  • Principles of surgical technique
  • Use of laser in oral surgery
  • The implant site
  • Raised floor of the maxillary sinus
  • Biomaterials used in bone regeneration
  • Simple and complex dental avulsion techniques
  • Incisional and excisional biopsy techniques
  • Elements of oral pathology for diagnosis and treatment of oral lesions
  • Advanced bone regeneration techniques
  • Piezoelectric surgery
  • Blood components for non-transfusion use in oral and implant surgery
  • Surgical endodontics
  • Management of the patient treated with bisphosphonates
  • Clinical and surgical management of the dental patient with systemic diseases
  • Dental traumatology
  • Emergency endodontics; Complications during endodontic treatments.
